CHOCOLATE TOXICITY
CHOCOLATES AND PETS
If not, then that means you have been done your share
reading about your pet.
If you are providing chocolate as treats, it is best to
discontinue…
Here is why?
NUMBER 1: Presence of
Methylxanthine alkaloids
·
These are found in cacao, THEOBROMINE the most
abundant. Caffeine also present in these foods
·
Do you know that these chemicals are present in
sleeping pills and diet pills.
NUMBER 2: RATE OF ABSORPTION
·
THEOBROMINE absorption of the body observed to
be within 8 to 10 hours
·
CAFFEINE absorption times will be around within
1-2 hours
·
HALF-LIFE means the time need for these
chemicals to be broken down. For dogs it can take 20 hours.
NUMBER 3: ORGAN AFFECTED
·
The LIVER is the primary organ involved in the
breakdown of these chemicals in the body. Non-specific symptoms like vomiting
and inappetence can be the initial signs.
·
The BRAIN.
THEOBROMINE and CAFFEINE can cross blood-brain barrier. That is why tremors and seizures are observed
in the intoxicated animal
·
The CARDIO-VASCULAR SYSTEM. Increases the heart rate and at the same
time enlargement of bronchial airways.
This only means danger for our pets.
NUMBER 4: HOLIDAYS
·
During holidays and celebrations where
chocolates are more abundant.
Mostly dogs are mainly affected. Cats can get intoxicated as well.
Birds are not exempted as well.
Bottom line Chocolates can make your pet sick.
In case of ingestion, bring to your veterinarian for decontamination and enhanced elimination of the substance. The sooner the better the less absorption in the body
