RINGWORM
Once you notice our pets, especially cats, have this circular areas of alopecia and on multiple areas, it is best to have them checked. Fungal infection or commonly known as "ringworm" is a zoonotic disease. Dogs can also acquire this infection thru direct contact.
ZOONOTIC - can spread from animal to human
How does it infect pets?
Infection from spores must contact the skin surface and defeat host protective mechanisms. Cuts, scratches and bites for example are entry points for the opportunistic organism.
Grows in the keratinized layers of hair, nail, and skin.
Contact with fungal spores does not necessarily result in an infection.
Infection may not result in clinical signs.
Incubation period from exposure to clinical lesions: approximately 2–4weeks.
Factors that favor the development of this skin condition:
- stress
- trauma
- parasitic infestations
- immunosuppression
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Circular patch of alopecia with scales. Can be localized - meaning found in 1-2 areas of the body or generalized infection - meaning almost all body parts are infected.
DIAGNOSTICS
- Wood’s Lamp - commonly used for detection. Green flourescence radiation indicates positive for the infection. UV lamps can also be utilised to visualize affected region. I have used this brand and I find it effective in detection of fungal spores during examination. I got this in Amazon. You check this UV lamp at this site as a short cut. TREATMENT
Recommended to be treated as outpatients. Oral and topical medication can be used to address infection. Best practice is to perform systemic and topical treatment to hasten recovery. Usage of anti-fungal drugs are best done under veterinary supervision to avoid liver complications.
Mandatory QUARANTINE / ISOLATION due to the infectious nature of the disease. Example, pet should be isolated in 1 room so that it will be easier to contain/clean, rather than allowing to let the pet roam the house.
Disinfection of surroundings - Vacuuming can decrease spores in the environment
Bleach can be used as a fungicide for the ENVIRONMENT
Owner should practice safety measures to avoid infection. Ex. Frequent handwashing

You know, it is six years since I started taking antiretroviral drugs...Yet whatever problems I face, the worst time has passedWhen I was evicted from the family home by my mother, my father rented a small room for me. But my mother and brothers believed that having HIV was my own fault – and that I deserved to be punished...I also considered myself unworthy and without hope... But I have a child and eventually I convinced myself to live for my child’s sake.

However, my father does interact with the community. I know his friends are mature and dignified africa america.
